The Flameproof Manufacturing team can already hear all your jokes and comments about the need for a thinking day at all! Yet, don’t you find that the more information we are exposed to, the more diluted our thinking becomes? From managing status updates to a barrage of messages on mobile devices 24/7 with an uncapped data plan – we are devouring information like never before.
No wonder, then, that some people are suffering from IFS (information fatigue syndrome) – “overthinking” to you and me! Do you tend to obsess about and over-analyse experiences and exchanges, read things into them that aren’t there, or find it difficult to get out of your head? If so, you are what psychologists call a ruminator. Psychology studies have found that over-thinking can be detrimental to your performance, and can lead to anxiety and depression, binge eating and binge drinking, and self-harm.
To avoid explosions of the head, we have taken World Thinking Day 2018 back from the Girls Scouts, and have changed it to World Over-thinking Day.
Top Tips To Stop Over-Thinking
- Acknowledge that you are a ruminator, and then forgive yourself. Turns out that “the organisation of our brains sets us up for over-thinking”.
By noticing your thinking patterns and forgiving yourself, you are taking back control and can work towards improving the value and quality of your thinking.
- Breathe! Suggesting that you think about doing something which happens without thinking may seem counterintuitive in the fight against over-thinking. Our bodies are incredibly linked to our state of mind, which is why, for example, we get sweaty palms when we are nervous. By using our lungs to breathe deeply, we trick our minds into feeling relaxed.
By exhaling for twice the count as your inhalation, the CO2 in your bloodstream increases, which in turn calms your adrenal (stress) system.
- Stop talking. This, too, could be the butt of an un-PC joke because more women than men suffer from overthinking. Flameproof Manufacturing is not going there though!
The real message is that every time you rehash your worries, you are reinforcing them. Be careful of “venting”, and choose who you seek advice from carefully.
- Action conquers fear. When you notice yourself ruminating, get up and do something positive and productive.
Worrying is like sitting in a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere.
